Frequently Asked Questions

What is Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)? In the simplest of terms, to TNR a cat is to trap her, spay her, and release her back into her natural environment. To learn more about TNR, click here.

Why is TNR necessary? An average female cat has one to eight kittens per litter and two to three litters per year. During her reproductive life a female cat can have more than 100 kittens. One female cat and her offspring can produce between 100 and 400 cats in seven years. Cats born on the street often die due to a lack of resources. TNR is the humane approach to addressing the cat overpopulation crisis.

Are there easier ways to reduce the number of stray cats? It was previously thought that the best way to reduce the number of stray cats was to simply remove them from the environment. Removing cats from a colony may cause a temporary decrease in the cat population, but this causes the Vacuum Effect: an opening in the area is created, and more cats will fill the void. This phenomenon has been observed in conservation studies in many species, not just cats. Catching and removing cats is expensive, deadly, and futile. Through TNR, the colony stops growing and naturally dies out.

How can I learn to do TNR on my block? Depending on our availability, we will meet with you one-on-one to teach you how to do TNR. If you would like to learn how to do TNR, please fill out our form.

Can I make tax-deductible monetary donations? Yes! Space City Cats is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Monetary donations are tax deductible and can be made here.

Can I donate leftover food or supplies that I don’t need? Yes! We welcome food and supplies donations. Please send us an email if you have in-kind donations you’d like to make.

I’m interested in adopting a cat. What do I do? You can view all of our adoptable cats here. You can find our adoption application here. Once you’ve filled out our adoption application, we will contact you to set up a 15-minute phone interview.

There is a friendly stray outside. Can I bring him to you? We are a foster-based rescue, and we do not have a physical shelter to accommodate every friendly stray cat we find. We rely entirely on fosters.

I have a cat that I no longer want. Can I bring him to you? The first thing you should do is contact the organization that you adopted from. There is likely a clause in the contract you signed that in the event you need to rehome an animal, you must return it to that organization.
